THE SPARK OF AN IDEA
We in the serviced accommodation sector are used to checking to see that kettles, hairdriers, television sets, etc., provided for guests are in working order between visits but do we always remember to have them tested annually by a qualified electrician?
Apart from the peace of mind this would give us, the regular testing of appliances and their certification could be vital in the event of an insurance claim following a fire or other accident due to faulty electrics. Such a service can be quick (often just requiring the
electrician to plug the appliance into a computer, which gives an immediate result, and to put a sticker on it to say that this is safe) and not expensive.
We are sure that our members won't mind being reminded that calling a qualified electrician at regular intervals to carry out these checks is well worth the effort and minor cost.
Those who went on the Fire Awareness Training Day with Morpeth Fire Brigade in October 2001 will never forget the lesson they learnt about how quickly fire can spread, with faulty electricals being one of the major causes.
