Home Where To Go Towns and Villages Warkworth

Warkworth

Drive into historic Warkworth with its medieval fortified bridge over the River Coquet and you will be charmed by this lovely village.

The main street of 18th and 19th century terraced houses provides a perfect frame for the magnificent castle that dominates the town. Shakespeare set some of the scenes for his play Henry IV at Warkworth, where the Earl of Northumberland and his son Harry Hotspur plotted their rebellion against the King.

Warkworth Hermitage is cut into the cliff side, a little way up stream from the castle and can be reached by rowing boat. Inside the cave there is a small chapel once occupied by a hermit paid to pray for the souls of the members of the Percy family.
