Amble
Amble has a delightful marina usually filled with a variety of yachts, leisure crafts and small boats, while the larger working harbour at the mouth of the River Coquet is worth a visit to check out the latest ‘catch of the day’. Amble harbour once bustled with colliers carrying coals from the great Northumberland coalfields from as early as 1239.
In the summer months you can take a boat trip from the harbour across to Coquet Island, an RSPB nature reserve which offers sanctuary to large numbers of seabirds, including puffins, eider ducks and roseate terns. The island is dominated by the 80ft high lighthouse built on top of the ruin of a medieval tower.
Amble Heritage Centre tells the story of this historic little town with its prehistoric burial grounds on the Links and the Roman site remains at Gloster Hill.
